Lava Lake Lamb Goes Organic!

Organic Lamb: Organic Lamb Announcement

Fall is here, and it's harvest time all over the country. Crisp apples are ripening in orchards and backyards. There are still some tomatoes on the vines in warm country. The last of the beans have been picked and canned, and kids are searching pumpkin patches for the perfect jack o'lantern. At Lava Lake the garden has frosted, and aspen are turning yellow. The elk are bugling in the hills, Canada geese honk greetings as they set out on their winter journeys, field mice are scurring around gathering grain. It's Fall.

Here at the Ranch, after a season of sowing a little ingenuity and persistence, a lot of care and attention, and the wisdom of good friends in the sheep business who remember the old ways of doing things (thank you, Grampa and Pete!), we are thrilled to be reaping a harvest of certified organic lamb.

Lava Lake's alfalfa fields have been certified organic for three years, and last year we were able to certify some of our wild range land as well. This was important to us, because we believe grazing on wild grasses and herbs is essential to creating the unique, delicious flavor of Lava Lake Lamb. Having certified range land allowed us to keep our special heritage breed Panama ewes and their lambs on certified organic land right at Lava Lake Ranch year-round. Next, we consulted with "Doc" Yoder, one of the foremost sheep veterinarians in the country, to ensure that we kept our animals healthy while meeting organic standards. A little remodel of an old calving corral gave us lambing sheds. And the result is that we can now offer our customers grass-fed certified organic lamb from the mountains of Idaho.

It's a very exciting and satisfying harvest season for us. We hope, wherever you are this fall, you can take a little time to get out and enjoy the landscape as the days grow shorter but richer in the fragrances of fall. Head for a farmer's market, visit a pumpkin patch, have some apple cider - and why not order some Lava Lake Organic Lamb. Experience the harvest.
