Despite Rain, New Orchard Is Complete!
By Phoebe Bean
Over the weekend, we successfully planted our new orchard at the main ranch! Originally, we had hoped to get all 32 fruit trees and shrubs in the ground by Friday evening, but due to severe rain and hail we had to continue the project on Saturday. The varieties of trees we planted include crabapples, pears, plums, apricots, and apples. We threw in a few elderberries, goji berries, snowberries, and lilacs as well!
During the first couple of hours on Friday before the rain hit, the soil was super dry and the holes were difficult to dig.
Once the trees were in the ground, we spread mulch around their bases to help retain moisture and act as a weed barrier.
As the rain began to come down, the soil loosened up a ton and we made great progress until the hail drove us inside. If all goes well, some of the trees will produce fruit in the early fall!
